Dating Safely

The overwhelming majority of people who sign up with dating services are perfectly decent and trustworthy. However, it's always better to be safe than sorry, so follow these simple tips when dating online or meeting for the first time:

While Dating Online

When writing your online dating profile, and in the early stages of sending e-mails, don't reveal details that would make it easy for someone to track you down. For example, don't say exactly where you live or work (the name of a town or city is sufficient), don't give the names of specific places you like to hang out and don't tell people your full name.

Consider opening a separate e-mail account for your online dating correspondence. That way, you'll be able to shut down the account if you run into problems, without affecting your other e-mails.

Talk to the other person on the phone before agreeing to meet. Don't just accept an invitation via e-mail.

Consider getting a separate phone/SIM card specifically for your dating calls.

Meeting for the First Time

Meet in a well-lit public place, where there are plenty of other people. This doesn't mean you have to choose the busiest venue you can find, but pick a place where people would quickly notice if you were having trouble.

Make your own way to and from the meeting. Don't let the other person pick you up, don't let them make your travel arrangements for you, and work out beforehand how you're going to get home after the date.

Tell a friend or relative where you're going and who you're meeting. Write it down so that they don't forget. Make sure that you have a way of contacting them (e.g. mobile phone) in case problems should arise.

Don't leave your handbag or wallet with your date if you have to visit the loo. Not only is theft a possibility, but you'd be giving them easy access to your personal information and your keys.

Always keep your drink in sight and make sure that no-one (including your date) has an opportunity to tamper with it. Again, although most people are perfectly honest, it's a sad fact that spiking of drinks with 'date rape' drugs is on the increase.

Don't drink too much. Aside from the fact that drunkenness won't make a good first impression, you need to stay alert and fully aware of what's going on around you.

For extra safety, consider going on a double date with a friend.

Trust your instincts, use your common sense and don't let your date talk you into doing something you don't really want to do. If they're genuine, they won't mind you be cautious. If they give you a hard time about it, you're better off without them. Remember - there are plenty of other people out there for you to meet.
